Concept art
After a career as graphic designer / multimedia artist in an advertising agency I decided to study again: 'concept art'. The book 'Game of fruits is my portfolio as concept artist and graphic designer. A 'concept artist' creates concepts and paintings for sets, characters, props for a movie.
Game of fruits
- As students in Syntra Hasselt Belgium, we got the assignment to develop concept art for a short movie, themed 'Evolution'. Fascinated by birds & nature, this became my subject.
- The book shows my research, sketches, storyboard, design for characters, sets, vehicle and props.
- As a graphic designer I did the entire bookdesign & including posterdesign for my short movie project.
- Read the story of 'Game of fruits' on the next page.

Game of fruits
Concept Game of fruits
"Ssssst...I want to tell you a secret. I am Bertil Bretel, ornithologist. What a spectacular discovery I made on my journey through Papua New Guinea! I suddenly spotted a swarm of birds. I started following them and they lead me to this very special tree...
- The main character of my story is ornithologist Bertil Bretel. On his trip to Papua New Guinea he finds a special tree. The inhabitants are unique bird species that developed ingenious insect catching strategies. Like David Attenborough he wants to make a documentary which he calls “Game of Fruits”.
- The name 'Game of fruits' is a nod to the tv-series 'Game of Thrones', because of the fierce competition between the birds.
- On his journey Bertil Bretel will have to deal with unexpected obstacles like sloths and the mysterious “Gypaetus Harpyjus Cum Cranium”.

Game of fruits
Let me introduce you to some characters I designed for this story.
Concept "Stinkie"
- The “Stinkie Durian Bird” looks like the durian, a stinking but delicious fruit of Thailand.
- Strategy: The bird farts! The smell attracts
a cloud of insects.
What a smell!
